Gwyn was brought up with a farming background; he then diversified into shooting and hatching but has gone back to his old roots. Over the years, Mr and Mrs Evans have concentrated on increasing their land holding with the aim of providing our own beef, lamb and game on the dining table, with the land capacity consisting of 1,500 acres, allows our cow breeding stock to grow.
WHAT ARE STABILISERS?
The Stabilizer is a unique beef cattle breed designed for efficiency and profitability. Developed in the 1970s by the USDA, it combines the best traits of British breeds like Angus and Hereford with the muscle and growth of Continental breeds like Simmental and Gelbvieh. This results in cattle known for their fertility, adaptability, excellent carcass quality, and strong maternal instincts. Stabilizers are ideal for low-maintenance beef production, making them a popular choice for sustainable farming.
The breed was bought onto Bettws Hall farm in 2014 when Gwyn purchased 14 Heifers and 1 Bull, after working on the breed; we became multipliers in 2018 for the stabiliser cattle company. The Stabiliser Cattle Company is now a UK leader in beef genetics producing Stabiliser® dam line breeding stock and offers added value for finished cattle through an arrangement with ABP Shrewsbury. The focus of the breeding programme is to improve the economic efficiency of suckler cows and the production of consistently high eating quality beef for least cost from forage-based systems.
We now have 15 breeding bulls and send young-stock to slaughter at 12 - 16 months.
All hands on deck at the end of May, where Gwyn and Amy Horn are busy preparing ‘Cow tinder’. We put cows to bulls in the last week of June, they are moved to around 35 acres of land per bull.
CAISLEY DNA TAGS
We tag our born heifers and bulls with Caisley DNA tags, we test every cow or bull that is going into the breeding line, we focus on getting the best pedigree cows and bulls as possible. This is done by putting Pure heifers/ cows with Pure Sires, also by comparing EBV results e.g if the cow has had a heifer with a very heavy birth weight, we look at the Sires performance birth weight and try to lower it.
