I was invited by a friend who’s shot with us for many years to see if I’d like to hang up my hosting shoes (wellies) and join him and a group of friends for a few days in Spain shooting partridge.
Of course, my immediate answer was ‘no thank you. Leave all this rain and cold for a much more temperate climate and what I’ve heard is the best place to shoot partridge in Spain? Definitely not!’
What can I say? The man twisted my arm….I knew resistance would be futile so I immediately consented.
Five minutes later and I’d finished booking my flights and packed my bags, despite the trip being another month away.
Finally, the day arrived and after a short flight to Madrid and a couple of hours by car, I arrived at the lodge to meet the rest of the team and feel some much needed sun on my skin (which after three months in the field during a very wet UK shooting season was more than a blessing).
To say I was impressed with the accommodation would be an understatement; it was in a truly beautiful setting, luxurious and spacious with a vista that your eyes would never tire of viewing.
After a heady night sampling some of the delicious world wines available, (again, they twisted my arm.) We got down to what we were all really there for, more wine, I mean shooting, we were there for the shooting! Now, I’d heard about this place before and read many an article extolling the virtues of the partridge and I was somewhat apprehensive that it wasn’t going to live up to my expectations, I was wrong! Eruptive, numerous and stratospheric are the adjectives which I feel conjure a mental image not too far from the truth. It really was partridge shooting on another level.
From breakfast to supper, the food was absolutely delicious. Feasts of fresh seafood and suckling pig sated all of our appetites and we wanted for nothing for the duration of our stay.
This trip was so special, I intend to repeat it one day (or as often as possible.) We have a few last minute spaces available within a team who’ll be heading over for a fantastic trip in February. Please contact me if you’d like to join them and test yourself on La partridge perfecto!
