Estate Essentials: Kempton

Unbelievably, it is 21 years this August since Gwyn & Ann were introduced to Kempton Estate by the late, great John Ransford…..and the rest, as they say, is history.

The industry has changed a lot since then but Kempton remains a solid cornerstone of the Bettws Hall portfolio, continuing to provide outstanding days of challenging birds accompanied by great hospitality in truly traditional Shropshire shooting countryside.

Whilst none of the birds presented on a Kempton shoot day are what the protagonists of ‘extreme’ birds would call out of range, we show quality sporting birds to our visiting guns whatever their ability. The drives vary from birds presented out of blocks of mixed woodland on the rolling hillsides such as; “Viagra”, “Keepers” and “Knobs”, to birds again presented over grass fields but out of cover crops strategically placed beyond woods, such as “Oaks” and “Bright’s”.

At present we shoot over approximately 2,000 acres in one block of land, so once you have arrived at our elevated shoot lodge with panoramic borderland views in the morning, you will stay on a network of private tracks and roads conveniently running throughout the Estate during your day. Whilst it is now predominately pheasants released at Kempton, plans are afoot to release a few red leg partridges into the Snape valley area of the shoot to spice things up a little!

This spring, as well as their normal ‘out of season’ duties, our 2 Kempton gamekeepers Luke Powell & Richard Tapp have been extremely busy updating, renewing & enlarging the release pens to further enhance the poults environment and ultimately the drives.

We’re also very pleased that cover crop cultivation’s are finally about to get under way after one of the wettest springs any of us here can remember, with a few minor tweaks to some of the plots.
